USJF Coach Certification April 7th in Santa Clara

There will be a USJF Coach Certification Clinic in Santa Clara on Saturday, April 7, 2018 hosted by Santa Clara PAL. This is a good opportunity to get or renew your Coach Certification through USJF. They have cut down the requirements from a 2-day clinic previously to a one day clinic. Also, USJF certification is now recognized at USA Judo National events. Details and entry form attached.

Gary Takemoto Referee Clinic November 4th

Olympic referee Gary Takemoto returns for another informative, entertaining clinic. For those seeking local or regional referee certification a CENCO written test will follow the Clinic.  This is a closed book test and Participants are expected to have studied CENCO’s recommended referee manual in advance: http://bit.ly/2xYKEo3; A practical examination will follow during Palo Alto’s tournament on Sunday November 5th at the Menlo-Atherton High School gym.

The clinic will cover both current status and possible future directions for rules and be of great value for Referees, Coaches, and Competitors alike:

  • Referees: Improve your “game” and get ready for further advancement
  • Coaches: Learn how Referees are being guided and prepare your athletes accordingly
  • Competitors: Learn how you can seek ethical advantages and avoid surprises on the mat

Clinic attire is slacks and polo shirts. The cost for CENCO members will be $35 and $40 for members of clubs outside CENCO.

The North Bay Developmental Shiai will be held August 20th in Petaluma. There are no black belt divisions at this tournament – kyu ranks only for both kids and adults.

As in previous years there will be a referee clinic the day before.

Junior Judo Camp at San Jose State July 17-18-19

Just a reminder that the deadline for discounted registration for the SJSU Camp is next Wednesday, July 5th.  Please encourage your students to participate as we believe this should be very educational, fun and a great workout.  Also, if you are able to help with the camp, please let me know which days you can attend.

2017 World University Games Clinic

The San Jose State University Judo team is holding a clinic on Saturday, May 13th, 9:00 a.m. It will feature clinicians Sensei Destinee Nagtalon and five other University Games members from SJSU Judo team.  The clinic will consist of the team teaching some of their best techniques and strategies for competition as well as providing a great workout. 

As a member of Cenco Yudanshakai (Central Coast Judo Association) you will have a reduced registration fee.  Bring your completed entry form, waiver, payment and USJF membership card to registration the day of the clinic.

Nakano Judo Academy Summer Competition Judo Training Camp & Clinic

Purpose: 1. Sharpen Judo skills before the major summer tournaments 2. lmprove Judo skills with Japanese style Randori 3. Build core strength with pinpoint drills and conditioning training

Date: June 10th – 11th 2017

Location: 855 Park Avenue, San Jose, CA 95126

Eligibility: Ages 10 yrs. old and above. Belt requirement: orange belt and higher. Open to current USJF, USJA & USA Judo Members. Must present card at registration.

Enrollment limit: 35 persons per day

Clinician: Shintaro Nakano, 5th Dan Black Belt and eight-time team member of the Japan National Team, will be the main instructor for the camp & clinics. He was Judo Coach at San Jose State University for 7 years, the premier North American college for Judo. Additionally, he has coached Marti Malloy, supporting her bronze medal win at the 2012 London Olympics, as well as Colton Brown another Olympian who competed in the 2016 games in Rio.

Schedule: 2 Clinic Workout Sessions (2 days/2 sessions per day). Morning sessions start at 10AM each morning. Door opens at 9AM each day for registration.

Referee Clinic with tests for both National and Regional/Local referees: 

NATIONAL AND REGIONAL REFEREE CERTIFICATION, Latest Rules Discussion

All clinics and written test will be at the SJSU Event Center, aerobics room, on Saturday, February 18, 2017.  Contact Vaughn Imada at vpimada@aol.com if you have questions regarding National and/or Regional Referee testing. 

Referee Clinic 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. ($20 payable to USA Judo)

National and Regional Referee Candidate written test 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. or soon after referee clinic.  New IJF contest rules as adopted by USA Judo discussed.  Referees attending clinic must be dressed in Referee attire.  National candidates must be fully dressed in referee suit and tie even at the clinic.

Candidates for Regional or Local Referee certification will be required to attend the referee clinic, pass the Regional/Local Referee test and receive a satisfactory evaluation in the practical portion during the event.  Regional/Local candidates may wear white polo shirt in lieu of white shirt, tie and coat.  $15 fee payable to “Cenco” to take the Regional or Local test and process certification.

NOTE:  The Regional/Local test will use legacy rules since that’s how the tournament will be fought.

Candidates for National Referee Certification must meet the following criteria and conditions.  A National Referee must:

  1. be at least 18 years of age.
  2. be a citizen of the USA.
  3. be a Regional Referee for at least one year.
  4. be a member of USA JUDO (USJI)
  5. have a recognized judo rank of Shodan (1st dan) or higher.

Candidates (National, Regional and Local) must attend the Clinic, pass the written test, referee the entire event and receive a satisfactory evaluation.  National Referee candidates should bring proof of age, citizenship, rank, regional certification and USA Judo membership to the Clinic.  For National Referee candidates there is a $20 fee to take the National test and a $10 one-time registration fee for successful National Referee candidates.  Checks should be made payable to USA Judo.

Here’s a list of what you need to have ready for that day (copies only — don’t want originals):

=> Digital 2X2 high rez passport photo (2 megapixel or better which you will email this to the people listed below).  You can email this to the Sensei listed below.

Copy of proof of age and US citizenship/permanent residence

=> Passport  OR birth certificate… not a driver’s license

=> Rank Proof copy (both Rank certificate or Rank validated USJI card)

=> Dated Regional Referee Certificate copy

=> Proof of USA Judo membership (current USJI card or Life Membership)

=> Background investigation results on file or download and submit background form to get it started.

You can ask the USJF office to share the one they did for any dan promotion for you to USA Judo.

The referee commision doesn’t want the results, they want it on file with USA Judo.
